A Broquet Of Performance

While covering the recent Subaru Pimp My Ride, I chanced upon Broquet. I have heard about it, seen it but have no idea what it is or what it does. The helpful ranting staff went on and on about how Broquet is a fuel catalyst which supposedly makes fuel burn more completely thus translating to faster acceleration, higher top speed, extremely reponsive mid-range and more miles for my tank of fuel.

Apparently Broquet is already used by car companies in some of their high performance models to satisfy their diet for high octane fuel. All good and well but what it is going to do for my normal 1500cc non turbocharged daily driver? I am no stranger to products which claim to increase power, save fuel though I think they are all hearsay but since Broquet has been around 10 years, the benefit of the doubt is in order here. I decided to setup a small experiment to see exactly how much I can benefit from installing Broquet in my car. I was going to find a nice stretch of road where I can get consistent ¼ mile timings and then right there by the road side get the Broquet installed and run ¼ mile timings again. To keep things honest and to minimize variables like temperature and humidity which can affect my timings I aimed to complete this exercise in 2 hours.

TEST DAY

I figured my relatively new car should get the correct grade of petrol as per manufacturers specifications. In this case, 95 RON for the test. A quick top up, tyre pressure check and off to the rendezvous point, Area D51, a quiet secluded long road. The weather was perfect, slightly overcast, 31 degree ambient temperature. I scouted the long desserted stretch just to be safe and setup our equipment for the runs. The team then decided that the same start point be used for accuracy and the return trip used to cool the car. The first 10 runs showed very consistent 18+ second runs and after omitting the slowest and fastest time the average of the 8 was 18.52 seconds.

After the stock trial runs, I stopped by the road side with hazzard light blinking and the Broquet team went straight to work like a well oiled pit crew. Bonnet open, fuel lines disconneted, Broquet bolted in and fuel lines reconnected in 18 minutes flat! The engine fired and we were ready to continue the test. We lined the car up at the starting position, set out meter and off! We clocked a 18.02, no way, none of the first 10 runs came close to this. Ok, we will do the 10 runs and see what ensues. The second run clocked 17.86 and by the time we were done the same 8 middle figures gave an average of 17.87 seconds! A 0.65 second drop in ¼ mile time. 4% increment in power. Yup this is real life acceleration runs, translating to real world speed increases not some dyno theoretical HP increase. What mattered most is that Broquet managed to increase power all across the rev range, rather than only at the top and bottom end. Skepticism aside I have to concede that Broquet does make my car accelerate faster. About 5 hp increment for a few hundred dollars, Broquet is worth every penny.
