Broquet Saves The Day
BROQUET SAVES THE DAY!
“IF IT WASN’T FOR BROQUET, WE MIGHT NOT HAVE FINISHED THE RALLY”These words came from Keith Parker after finishing the grueling 11,000km., 17 Stage Paris-Dakar-Cairo Rally, with Dick Partridge in their modified Isuzu Trooper. The route of the TOTAL Dakar-Cairo 2000 went from Dakar in the west through the inhospitable terrain of the Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso and Libya to Cairo in the east.
Conditions for the 425 competitors ranged from savannas, deserts and mountains, to soft sand, rocks and narrow rutted roads, with the occasional terrorist threat thrown in. Not surprisingly, casualties amongst the vehicles were high, and over 40% failed to make the finish.
The final words however must again belong to Keith - “In a very rough part of the [penultimate] Stage we realised that both rear springs had broken. After a stop to repair, as best we could with only one spare top leaf, we carried on at a much slower pace to nurse the car to the finish. Due to the vehicle problems, and the length of the Stage [722kms] we were very low on petrol, so much so that the petrol pump was sucking air when we went over the dunes. If we had not put a Broquet in the tank when preparing the car, I am certain we would have run out of petrol, before the end of the Stage. The Broquet definitely increases the power, as well as mpg, and as it is not a fuel additive, there were no problems with the rallying regulations.
Well done to both Keith and Dick - rather you than me!
